Students with Diabetes Internship Program™

The Students With Diabetes Internship Program™ is a competitive program designed to develop and train undergraduate and graduate students living with T1D (Type 1 Diabetes) to become the next generation of leaders in the diabetes community.
This exciting new program will introduce young adults living with T1D to various professional opportunities within the diabetes community. The goal is to foster professional development and provide young adults living with T1D the business and life skills necessary for a successful career in diabetes.
Internships will be offered in a variety of business sectors functioning in diabetes including non-profit management, clinical, research, sales, communications, marketing, technology, publishing, policy and advocacy/government affairs.
Requirements for Participation:
- Participants must be a full-time student in an undergraduate or graduate program and have successfully completed at least 1 year of course work (Ages 18-25)
- Participants must be either Bachelors or Masters degree students
- Participants must have lived with diabetes for at least 1 year
- Participants must be Members of Students With Diabetes – via website
- Participants must provide a Letter of Support from a health professional
- Participants must provide a Letter of Recommendation from a professor or employer
- To receive college credit, participants must furnish approval documents from their college or university to both Students With Diabetes and the internship site coordinator

At least 12 young adults with T1D will be chosen for internships. The selection criteria includes:
- GPA
- Writing sample
- Career Aspirations
- Sense of Commitment
- Recommendations (professional, faculty and medical)
- Completed of Application
- Resume
- Phone Interview with Students with Diabetes and/or host site
Internship Awards:
- Internship Awards will be announced on March 15, 2013!
- Internships are available with the following: (Internships will be announced on December 1, 2013)
Expectations of Interns:
Interns shall provide the following:
- A weekly blog for SWD website / Facebook (video and/or writing)
- A learning report due at the end of the internship (2-3 page paper)
- Professional behavior
- Willingness to cover travel expenses to the internship location
- Participation in SWD National Conference (May 31 – June 2, 2013) and SWD Leadership Training Academy (May 30 – 31, 2013)
Expectations of Host Sites:
Companies or governmental departments shall provide summer internships including:
- A learning opportunity to a student living with type-1 diabetes to help foster their academic and professional development
- A 6-8 week summer intership
- Traditional stipend for intern(s)
- Assist student in locating housing for internship time period
- Mentorship of student
- Advertising of the SWD Internship Program partnership on company websites and social media sites
